The Vieng Xai caves

The Vieng Xai caves are a widespread network of caves that were home to about 23,000 people during the Vietnam War. It was virtually a hidden city and is now open to the public as a tourist attraction.

The city of Vientiane is the capital of Laos and is located on the banks of the Mekong River. It is also within close proximity to the Vieng Xai caves. If you are travelling to Laos, staying in Vientiane, serviced apartments would be a good option to consider as your accommodation. The Vieng Xai caves are located in the northeast of Laos in the Hua Phan province, right next to the border of Vietnam. The region that comprises of the caves is renowned for being the headquarters of the Communist Pathet Lao forces during their struggle with the Lao Royal family in Vientiane. This was also the same time that the Vietnam War was underway.

The caves were home to the Communist army during the period. Comprising of a hospital, military barracks, markets, living spaces, bakeries, shops and theatre, the Vieng Xai caves, functioned as a mini city during the war. The caves even had printing presses and government offices. Even the Pathet Lao force’s leaders were housed in the caves, from where they commanded the final stages of the war.

Eight caves are open to the public. Of these the most important ones are Kaysone’s, Red Prince Souphanouvong, Theatre Cave and the deepest cave, Tham Xieng Muang.

Other attractions in Vientiane include the enormous gilded stupa (Pha That Luang), the Buddha Park, crumbling French colonial buildings, street markets, noodle shops and a number of Buddhist temples.

Water Sports In Sri Lanka’s Southern Coast

Sri Lanka is one of the mind blowing islands of the Indian Ocean. All year round thousands of tourists make their way to this island paradise. Maduganga River Safari

Madu Ganga, a coastal wetland ecosystem and estuary located at Balapitiya, is a virgin mangrove forest in Sri Lanka. The best way to experience the beauty of this is by boat. This safari takes one through cool and shady mangrove caves, secluded islands, cinnamon plantations, ancient temples and plenty more. This river safari is the one of the best things to do in Bentota while staying at the beautiful Saman Villas hotel.

The river has around 64 islands, and is also a birdwatcher’s paradise and home to exotic bird species. As cruising along the river, one passes through thick mangrove vegetation, monkeys chilling on treetops, and giant water monitors weaving through the waters. Further upstream, kraal-fishing constructions made of bamboo, used for prawn fishing is plentiful. A collection of islets is found in this region, from tiny specks housing deserted shrines, to larger ones home to over 250 families connected to the mainland by a footbridge. One can see these inhabitants engaged in traditional cottage industries like fishing and cinnamon production.

Cruising along, one can visit the cultural landmark the Kothdoowa Raja Viharya. This ancient temple is on a beautiful setting on the river, where one can feed the friendly mountain squirrels that reside on the island, receive blessing from the head priest, take a tour of the temple and discover the 130 year old Bo tree.

The boat ride stops over at a floating fish farm where one have a can an extremely unique pedicure, where, hundreds of red tilapia fish in a small square begin to nibble at the feet when dipped in to the water. This fish nibbling can be quite relaxing.

There is also an island where cinnamon products are made. A small demonstration doneby a local shows how the cinnamon bark is peeled and processed. One can buy fresh cinnamon and cinnamon oil here.

Coral Sanctuary in Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa is a popular tourist destination in the South of Sri Lanka. Located under 100 km away from the capital it is now accessible in less than an hour thanks to the Southern express way. Mirissa is a point break location with intermediate level waves. Local surfers can be considered to be average to good. Best waves can be experienced early morning and late afternoon. Morning periods are considered to be the best. Mirissa is an exposed reef break that has reasonably consistent surf, although summer tends to be mostly flat. Offshore winds blow from the north. Groundswells more frequent than winds wells and the ideal swell angle is from the southwest. While the main focus in Mirissa is on beach life and surfing, many interesting places to visit are close by. Tea- and rubber plantations, the market town of Matara and the Yala National Park with its exciting wildlife are just some examples to choose from. Compared to Hikkaduwa surfing is still fun without real line ups and consistent waves. Best times for surfing in Mirissa is from October to March.
