A stay in Johannesburg and its key areas, such as Sandton, offers travellers much to experience. Don’t forget, however, that it also provides an ideal base from which to easily visit parks and reserves where you can experience the “wilder” side of Africa!
Lion & Safari Park
Located in Broederstroom, the Lion & Safari Park is a great place to explore, and can be reached within an hour or so from properties like NH Johannesburg Sandton. You can actually drive your own or rented vehicle here through enclosures to see lions, hyenas, wild dogs, giraffes, warthogs and more. Of course, you also get informative guided tours, while other highlights include a chance to feed giraffes or go on horseback safaris.
Bothongo Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve
Next up is the Bothongo Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve, home to more than 600 animals, including rhinos, lions and buffalo, three of the reputed Big Five. Of course, you may also encounter cheetahs, wild dogs, antelope, hippos and the Cape vulture. Both self-drive and guided safaris are on offer, while not to be missed are the predator feeding sessions, Bothongo Wonder Cave and Snake & Reptile Park. Since it’s easy to reach this reserve, you have time to enjoy rewarding things to do in Sandton on your return.
Dinokeng Game Reserve
The Dinokeng Game Reserve is not to be missed because, here, you can actually see all of the Big Five, namely the lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. At this reserve in Gauteng, self-drive options are on offer along with guided game drives as well as bush walks, which offer a more up-close adventure. Be on the lookout to spot wildebeest, hippos, Nile crocodiles and kudu as well, while there are bird hides to see many feathered species.
The Marievale Bird Sanctuary

Another option is to head to the Marievale Bird Sanctuary from Johannesburg for a rewarding day of birdwatching in South Africa. Part of this sanctuary encompasses an Important Bird Area and features diverse habitats, too, including wetlands, which attract migrant birds. Once you find a good bird hide, be patient, because you have a chance to see the slaty egret, little bittern, Pacific golden plover, African rails, goliath heron and more.
