Wilpattu Wildlife Park

Located under an hour away from Palagama Beach Resort, Wilpattu Wildlife Park is the largest wildlife park in Sri Lanka as. Set in the Northwest of the country and 30km away from Anuradhapura, Wilpattu is one of two Sri Lankan wildlife reserves which contain leopards. Literally translated as ‘Land of Lakes’, there are over 50 ‘villu’ to be explored, all of them teeming with wildlife including Star tortoises, pond turtles and Soft shelled turtles. Mugger crocodiles, Indian pythons, Asian elephants and sloth bears are also prominent and exhibit the diversity of species inhabiting the park. For ‘big game’ animal spotting, Wilpattu is absolutely ideal.

Spanning over 130,000 hectares, Wilpattu is an utterly vast space. Reaching heights of 152 meters above sea level, it is one of the most prestigious and visited parks in the world, yet it retains its natural mystique. Considering the abundance of wildlife, flora and birdlife on show, it’s very easy to see why. Accordingly, Palagama Beach Resort offer full day tours of about 8 hours, in order to demonstrate the staggering beauty of the landscape and the rugged elegance of the fauna. A half-day tour is also available, lasting about 4 hours, which also offers the opportunity to witness the full spectrum of Wilpattu’s geography, wildlife and flora.

Simply put, Wilpattu is one of the Sri Lanka tourist attractions not to be missed and with tours at our Sri Lanka resorts made available all year round, it becomes even more inexcusable to do so.
