If you’re ready to explore Kandy on foot, the region’s hiking trails offer something for every level of adventurer. Winding through lush hills and dense greenery, these paths provide a mix of gentle walks and more challenging treks, each rewarding you with fresh air and breathtaking views.
Pre-Hiking Tips
When preparing for a hike in Kandy, make sure to plan thoroughly and gather information from multiple sources rather than relying on a single guide, video, or friend’s advice. Hiking with a group and an experienced guide is strongly recommended. Staying in 4-star hotels in Kandy, Sri Lanka, including the likes of Kandy Myst by Cinnamon, should be a good start, with its access to guides and information.
Knuckles Range 1 – the Hunasgiriya Route
As you approach the trails, you’ll be surrounded by mountains, valleys, lakes, and rolling greenery that make it easy to get lost in the natural beauty. The hike itself, around 12 km, is moderately challenging and takes you through forests, streams, and areas rich with birdlife. The path remains relatively gentle at first but becomes steeper as you progress.
Knuckles Range 2 – the Rangala Route
For hikers who crave a challenge, the Rangala route to the Knuckle top is an ideal choice. This captivating trail winds through lush tea estates, dense forests, and even past a temple, offering constantly changing scenery. The path is uneven and predominantly uphill, making it a tougher climb, but the effort is rewarded by a river that spills into five stunning waterfalls near the end.
Alagalla Range

This trail offers a refreshing walk through vibrant greenery and sprawling tea estates. Along the way, you’ll pass tea factories, plantations, and a few local village areas. The path then leads into dense jungle and onto concrete sections before reaching Alagalla Peak, which looms beautifully in the distance. The trek generally takes 2–3 hours to complete.
