Fish Head in Maldives

Fish Head, Mushi Mas Mingili Thila or Shark Point is a pinnacle dive site in the North Ari Atoll that is among the best places in the world to see sharks. The “thila” or pinnacle is flat topped and rises sharply from about 35 meters down from the ocean floor stopping about 10 meters short of the surface. It features a stunning underwater landscape of caves and overhangs, among which is excellent coral growth supporting a huge variety of marine life. As it is only 80 metres wide, divers can swim around it in one dive if the current is not too strong. The reef’s popularity increased after it was declared a protected marine sanctuary in 1995. With the subsequent increase in marine life, it is now among the top ten dive sites in the world.

The main attraction here is sharks, particularly grey and white tip reef sharks that gather in large numbers. Sixteen are known to be resident in the area. Other pelagic species frequenting the thila include hump head wrasse, eagle rays, giant trevally, barracudas and a Napoleon wrasse measuring 1.5 meters in length. Schools of bat fish and hordes of fusiliers are found at shallower depths. The thila rises steeply and around 25 to 30 metres, its walls feature caves, overhangs and ledges covered in a profusion of sea fans, anemone and black coral. Divers usually float around at 15 metres to obtain the best possible views of the underwater landscape and marine life. As sharks can be spotted here in the up-current part of the reef unlike at other shark dive sites, divers can observe them from many secure locations without getting in their way. This is one of the best spots to observe shark behavior such as exposing their teeth to cleaner wrasse, resulting in some of the best photos of marine life in the Maldives being shot here.

As an all-year diving destination, Fish Head is most suitable for intermediate divers. A surface balloon attached to an ascent/descent line is recommended to mark the dive spot due to the presence of a large number of water craft and also because of unpredictable currents. The best way to dive here is from a liveaboard boat as otherwise it involves a rather long journey by boat to get here. Experience the best of the Maldives with a little help from Naladhu Maldives. Marine wildlife in abundance in Maldives

The Maldives islands as a land base is quite minimal and previously uninhabited islands too have now been developed in order to sustain the growth of visitors to the island nation. As a result land based wildlife is fairly limited. Those that are present are largely water related.

However when it comes to marine wildlife there is certainly no other place quite as satisfying nor as photographic as what lies beneath the waters off the beaches of Maldives.

On land whilst there are a few goats and cats, dogs and pigs are not allowed on the island for religious reasons. There are also two species of lizards and geckos as well as two species of snakes. There are quite a number of species of birds however most are migratory who fly in from Europe during winter. Some types of heron, terns, hens and crows are island based.

A significant display that is a sight to see is when a large group of birds simultaneously sweep down onto the water in pursuit of fish. In fact many fishermen base their catches on this display.

Under the waters however sharks, dolphins, rays, tuna, coral fish of every shape, size and colour can be found in and around the island waters at different times of the year, according to weather and current conditions.

A visit to the Maldives should most definitely include a couple of days journeying to various islands, snorkelling and scuba diving in the waters as this will provide you with the most colourful and breathtaking impression Maldives has to offer. Casting Lines

The nutrient rich waters of Maldives offer some of the best opportunities for fly fishing enthusiasts. Bonefish, several varieties of Giant Trevally, Sailfish, Tuna, Wahoo, Bonito, Triggerfish and Parrotfish that grow to great sizes are available just off the beaches of its resorts. The abundance of fish in shallow water means fly fishermen do not have to venture far out to sea to hook a fish. Besides fishing in warm blue tropical waters holds a tremendous appeal for many fly fishermen once the fishing season in temperate zones have come to an end. Fishing excursions promoted by resorts allow for tailoring programs according to individual preferences. Fly rods, reels, lines and flies to snag bonefish and other varieties can be hired at site.

While anglers are only just getting to know about the fly fishing opportunities in the Maldives, this method of fishing where an artificial lure is used to attract the fish and the art of casting a line needs to be mastered; is relatively new to the local population. The catch and release practice of fly fishing also fits in well with sustainable tourism practices advocated by the Maldives.

The flats are extensive sandy shallows into which fish move with the incoming tide to feed. It is possible to see the fish and cast a lure directly at them. This method of fly fishing requires practice and skill. The Maldives offers several excellent locations for fishing this way. Fly fishing season begins when the wind shifts to the Northeast from the Southwest, that means around October. The weather lasts for about six month thereafter. Many fishing destinations are not family friendly but in the Maldives it is possible for the whole family to have an incredible experience as the fish are found quite close to the shore. Besides flat fishing, excellent blue water fly fishing opportunities are also available. Many well equipped craft are available on a daily or multi day basis to deliver an optimum fly fishing experience. Most of the fish hooked by fly fishermen are over 20 pounds with the Giant Trevally exceeding 40 pounds. Teasing techniques are used to get the fish to bite.
