Planning a Trip to Sigiriya in 2026: Essential Visitor Tips, Ticket Information & Best Times to Explore

Tickets and Entry

Foreign visitor entry currently costs between US$20 and US$35 per adult, based on the country they are from. The ticket covers access to the rock, the on-site museum, and the full archaeological complex. Hotels like Water Garden Sigiriya are located close to the site, making it easy to arrive within 20 minutes or less.

Best Time to Go

For a sunrise climb, consider arriving between 6.00 AM and 6.30 AM. If you do not want to wake up early, the view during sunset is equally breathtaking. As such, a sunset climb can commence around 3.30 PM. Many luxury hotels in Sigiriya help their guests plan the perfect visit to the fortress based on their preferences.

What to Wear

Sneakers and light, breathable clothes are essential as you need to climb to the top of the rock. The sun can be harsh during the day, so make sure to pack a sun hat or visit early in the morning or in the afternoon when the sun is mild.

What to Expect

The climb takes most visitors around 90 minutes or more round trip, based on your pace. During the climb, the frescoes, ponds and the lion paws give a sense of what an architectural marvel this fortress is.
