Exploring Gaafu Alifu Atoll: A Guide to One of the Maldives’ Most Remote Destinations

Gaafu Alifu isn't for travellers who settle. Far out in the southern reaches of the Maldives, this breathtaking paradise rewards those who venture far. Whether you're searching for unspoiled beaches, unmatched luxury, or authentic local experiences, here's how to explore one of the Maldives' most pristine atolls.

What Makes Gaafu Alifu Your Dream Destination?

Located over 300km south of Malé, the Gaafu Alifu Atoll is one of the Maldives ' best-kept secrets—and one of the largest natural atolls on earth. Unlike the more popular northern destinations, this southern gem is home to numerous uninhabited islands, local villages, healthy reefs and virtually untouched landscapes—perfect for discerning explorers looking to escape the crowds.

Experiences & Excursions

As far as excursions in Maldives go, there's no better place to try snorkelling and diving than the Gaafu Alifu Atoll. With fewer boats around and less development in the region, visitors can swim through pristine coral and underwater gardens, encountering vibrant fish, congregations of manta rays, and even whale sharks found in the outer reefs.

Getting There

You will need to take a domestic flight from Velana International Airport to Kooddoo Airport. From there, a speedboat transfer will take you straight to your luxury resort. Some properties, such as The Residence Maldives, offer private charter flights directly from Velana.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season, running from December to April, typically offers the best weather and conditions for outdoor exploration. However, the low season (May through September) offers discounted rates and seasonal marine encounters.
