Camel Riding

What is an Arabian escape without a camel back ride? The camels of Arabia are considered as an important icon of these nations. The UAE which is a hot spot for tourists are not short them! The capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi hosts thousands of tourists each year. Camels which have been a major part of the Arabian civilisation have now become part of recreational activities for tourists. Most resorts and private operators offer camel back rides. One of the renowned resorts that organise camel rides as a part of their Abu Dhabi Resort Tour is the renowned Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara.

The best time to embark on this journey would be the early hours of the day or close to sunset. Camelback rides are regarded as one of the best ways to explore the vast majority of the deserts of Abu Dhabi. The camels are often referred to as the ships of the desert, one will agree with the term once they hop on a camel back. It’s not made in reference to the speed of the motion but how the passengers sway back and forth and sideways while on a camel back. Most tourists who jump on a camel often think the lump on the camel back is the water stored, however, it is the mechanism of storing fat.

The rides can be exhausting due to the heat, hence, most stop for refreshments at camps that depict the ancient Emirati life. These rides are also an excellent way to experience the old and modern architecture of the Middle East. The packages can range from a few hours to an entire day. So if you plan on visiting Abu Dhabi make sure to include a camel back ride in your agenda.

Sri Lanka, being a tropical country with a warm temperature throughout the entire year, is a fertile ground of various species of avifauna. During the peak of the migratory season, Sri Lanka is visited by many exotic species of birds, thus making Sri Lanka a prime destination of bird-watching enthusiasts.

The migratory season of Sri Lanka spans from August through March, and includes both summer and winter migratory birds. During this season it is estimated that at least 103 different species of avifauna regularly enter the forests and national parks of Sri Lanka. In addition to this at least another 100 migratory and nomadic birds visit Sri Lanka on rare occasions. Interestingly, during the summer migration only the Pink Tern visits Sri Lanka, whereas all the other species that migrate to Sri Lanka do so during the winter season. Among the migratory birds that one can witness in Sri Lanka are the Sandpipers, Philippine Shrikes, Dalmatian Pelicans, Black Storks, Great White Pelicans, Little Grebes, and many other exotic birds. The best time to go bird-watching is during the start of the season, when the birds are tired from their long flights and tend to stay together and move slowly.

Turtle Hatchery in Kosgoda

Laboriously setting foot on the Southern shores of Sri Lanka are the tender-shelled Leatherback Turtles, the endangered Olive-Ridley Turtles, the extremely rare Loggerhead Turtles, the sharp-nosed Hawksbill Turtles and the very famous Green Turtles. These loving creatures possess one-track minds, and that is to lay their much-valued eggs on the sands of Kosgoda, a relatively small town in the Southern Province of the paradise isle. And aren’t they a lucky bunch of turtles? Kosgoda is famous for turtle conservation, Sri Lankaproviding an ideal haven for these marine creatures. Merely an hour’s drive away from the well-known Turtle Hatchery in Kosgoda is Cantaloupe Aqua, an ultra-modern beach resort that will facilitate your visit to the turtle hatchery while ensuring that you explore nearby Unawatuna.
The Turtle Conservation project in Kosgoda was initiated in 1988 by the Wildlife Protection Society of Sri Lanka. Since then, the hatchery has been lovingly maintained by Mr. Dudley Perera and his equally enthusiastic family. Since its inception the hatchery is reported to have ensured the safe journey of over 3.5 million baby turtles. What a feat!
Before the baby turtles paddle away into the dangerously calm sea, they are allowed to strengthen themselves for a short period of time within the hatchery. Intruders and predators are also barred from the birthing grounds in order to make sure that the first few hours of their lives are without danger. Visit the hatchery and observe the meticulous ways in which all harm is averted.
If your interest in the conservation of turtles is deep-rooted, you can also register to volunteer. Even for a short period of time, your work would be considered invaluable. It would be also a joy to constantly see these little beings bravely enter the world.
A visit to the turtle hatchery is a ‘must’ if you plan to explore the Southern Coast of Sri Lanka.
